In this study, the authors wanted to investigate the role of
oxygen radicals in acne inflammation. They enrolled 43 patients
with acne and 24 healthy controls, and measured enzyme activities
(myeloperoxidase/MPO and superoxide dismutase/SOD) to check the
levels of oxygen radicals.
The authors found that there is no difference in the activity
of MPO, but a statistically lower activity of SOD in patients
with acne as compared to the healthy control. Because of this,
the authors suggest that oxygen radicals may play a role in acne
and that new anti-acne drugs should include substances with anti-oxidant
properties.
