Previously, acne was considered an infectious disease caused
by Propioniium bacteria acnes, however, it was subsequently shown
that inflammation caused by the bacteria was more important than
simple infection.
Also, it was previously thought that androgens or male sex hormones
were the agents that stimulate sebum production from the sebaceous
glands. Today, however, neuromediators have also been identified
as stimulants of sebum production.
